"'Pig swinging' became a popular sport in the 1700s after it was invented when pigs were walked from London Fields to Smithfield Market. It involved greasing their tails, swinging them round their heads and hurling them to see who could throw them the furthest."

The takeover of the Overground at Hackney Central has been fantastic for the local area - there's proposals for Crossrail 2 at this station too!

What locals say about E8

  1. I love Hackney because it's very multicultural and there's lots of fun things to do, including Victoria Park.

  2. I love Hackney because it is so diverse and a great place to be. It is an amazing feeling to live in Hackney because it is filled with so many different people from all around the world. I love going to Hackney empire to watch shows with my friends, especially comedy shows. I've grown up in Hackney all my life and I've watched it transform into this amazing place I knew it could be. All the buildings, streets and roads bring back so many memories and each place in Hackney has significance to me and that's why I love it. I couldn't wish for another place to be other than Hackney due to its welcoming people, diversity, talent and its beauty. Hackney really is the place to be.

  3. I love the diverse culture in Hackney. Broadway Market is a fantastic place and has some great gastro pubs as well as some lovely restaurants. There are some cracking schools in the area and there are also lots of nice parks, which I love as I am training for a triathlon.

  4. Hackney is a prized jewel in the crown of East London. With its Victorian architecture and ample transport links into the commercial heart of London, busy city workers can commute to Liverpool St in ten minutes yet still happily spend their weekends drinking Artisan coffee on the green expanses of London Fields. It is a true cultural melting pot, in the sense that it has embraced all of the influences borne upon it, as well as within. Music, art and food are central to Hackney’s cultured soul so you cannot spend a day here without falling in love with at least one of them. With a large influx of young, first time buyers in the last five years, as well as the original crowd that have seen drastic changes in the last decade, Hackney has a genuine sense of rejuvenation to it – a borough that has slipped seamlessly from antiquated to vintage and is still ripening in 2015.

  5. The people, sense of community, everything I need is nearby. I just wish it wasn't so expensive - I want to stay here!

  6. A fantastic gentrifying neighbourhood in its own right, Dalston also has great transport and sits between other great areas such as trendy Islington, yummy mummy Stoke Newingtin, leafy London Fields and Shoreditch to the south. The area has a brilliant mix of residents from all social and ethnic backgrounds. Is there more interesting more varied part of London?! I don't think so...we just need a few more decent shops and a Waitrose would be lovely!

  7. It's a green haven with Millfields park, beautiful Leabridge Nature Reserve, great canal walk to Springfield park and cafe. Fantastic for activities: Running miles around Lea Valley nature reserve, Park run every Saturday morning, riding stables, ice rink, Water Works golf centre, bird sanctuary, rowing club and marina.

  8. Chatsworth Rd market on Sunday, Venetia's cafe, The creperie, Hop Toy Shop, L'Epicerie, friendly Regal chemists, amazing Punjabi food at the Elderfield Pub on Mon & Sat, Pages bookshop, the Marshes to run on and explore on bike, The icerink & stables... it's interesting and creative people.

  9. Two stops away from Westfield!

  10. The Olympics!!

  11. Broadway Market - It has great bars, restaurants, and an amazing farmers market. We also have a 50m heated pool which is sitiuated in London Fields which is a huge green space. It has a community feel and feels like I am on hoiliday every time I go there.
