Your perfect first day in Greenwich: how to explore the area

🌞 Ready to explore? Grab your phone (you'll want pics). Riverside paths along the Thames make the most amazing summer walks – with plenty of pubs along the way to reward your efforts with a cold pint in a sunny beer garden.

☔ Keep an eye out for gigs – the O2's right on your doorstep for last-minute tickets to the big names.

🛒 Royal Hill's gorgeous row of shops are worth a wander, and Greenwich Market's food court is a feast for the senses.

👋 Meet your neighbours: who lives in Greenwich?

Many move to Greenwich for two things. First, for its excellent connections into Central London, you're just a 10-minute train away from the suits of Canary Wharf and the buzz of London Bridge. However, Greenwich feels worlds away from city life. And second, village charm rules – independent shops, cobbled streets in the market and enough green spaces to make you realise living in London is not like other cities.

It's a proper mix here. Uni students and parents of school-aged children love Greenwich for its academic merit, whilst city workers appreciate the easy commute. We find many families and first-time buyers focus their search on Greenwich with the intention to put down roots because there’s such a range of properties in a very handy location.

🔍 Is Greenwich a good place to live?

Florence Longhurst and Divyesh Bhanderi, who manage Foxtons Greenwich office, think so.

"Greenwich is not only steeped in history but also boasts an undeniable charm and beauty. The area is known for picturesque streets, lush green spaces, and stunning riverside views. Living in Greenwich means having Greenwich Park as your backyard, where you can enjoy peaceful walks, picnics, and beautiful views of London.

"The local community is vibrant and welcoming, with a variety of pretty cafes, markets, and unique shops that give the area a cozy, village-like feel. The Thames Path offers a scenic route for joggers and cyclists, and the proximity to the river adds a refreshing touch to daily life.

"Greenwich is also a fantastic place to work, with excellent transport links to central London, making commuting a breeze. The area's blend of historic charm and modern amenities creates a perfect balance for both professional and personal life. Whether you're admiring the stunning architecture of the Old Royal Naval College or enjoying a riverside meal, Greenwich truly offers a delightful living and working environment." :

“The National Observatory, the Maritime Museum, the Queens House and Greenwich Hospital, Old Royal Naval College and the Prime Meridian…
This World Heritage site is more of a collection. Each building it includes has significance in the history of exploration - through land, sea and the night sky.”

📸 Greenwich's most insta-worthy spot

Greenwich is beautiful all around. However, the most picturesque spot is easily Greenwich Park. You'll see people taking pictures here all the time. Just hike the hill and you will find the most breathtaking views of the London skyline.

👑 Greenwich’s claim to fame

Sure, Greenwich is best known as the home of the Prime Meridian (as in Greenwich Mean Time), but we've also got London's only planetarium and The Tide – the city's first elevated riverside park.

Born in Greenwich:

Actual royalty were born here – King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I were born in Greenwich Palace. Dame Vanessa Redgrave and footballer Chris Smalling also started in Greenwich.

You're spoilt for choice: hop on the Jubilee line, DLR, or head to the Pier to catch a Thames Clipper boat (you can tap in with your Oyster). Want something different? Take the cable car over to Royal Docks – the views are incredible.

📍 Where is Greenwich?

Greenwich is in Zone 2, in the Royal Borough of Greenwich, in East London.
